NHTSA Complaint #11525875 — 2015 BMW X3

The contact owns a 2015 BMW X3. The contact stated while her husband was driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle started to decelerate independently. The driver stated that he started to smell a smoke odor inside the cabin of the vehicle and saw smoke coming from under the hood. The contact stated that no visible flames were seen. The contact stated that the drive train warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to park on the side of the road and exit the vehicle safely. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler, the valve cover, and intake manifold was melted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The local dealer was contacted. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.
