NHTSA Complaint #11490052 — 2011 BMW 128I

The contact owned a 2011 BMW 128i. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact had experienced a failure. The contact stated as he pulled into a parking lot at approximately 5 MPH he began to smell a burning plastic odor. The contact said that the vehicle dash vents began to issue gray smoke. The contact had parked the vehicle and turned it off, he opened the hood and the vehicle engine compartment immediately ignited. The contact stated that the fire department was called and extinguished the fire with foam. The police also arrived on the scene and filed a report. The vehicle had to be towed to an impound lot and was no longer drivable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.
