NHTSA Complaint #11443346 — 2014 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idled in a parking lot, the alternator overheated and there was smoke coming from under the hood while the engine was revving. The vehicle shutoff, and the contact could not restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V435000 (Electrical System). The mechanic replaced the alternator, battery, serpentine belt, and cabin air filter. The vehicle was also taken to the dealer per the manufacturer's request. The dealer performed an inspection and informed the contact that all the repairs performed by the independent mechanic were per the dealer's specifications. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and three cases were opened. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and submit all necessary documents and receipts for reimbursement. The manufacturer later denied the contact's request for reimbursement due to the vehicle being out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000. THE CONSUMER STATED THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED A REIMBURSMENT FOR A PORTION OF THE TOWING AND REPAIR COSTS. THE CONSUMER RELUCTANTLY ACCEPTED THE OFFER.
