2025 HONDA ODYSSEY Engine Problems

My 2025 Honda Odyssey features a standard Auto Idle Stop system designed to improve fuel efficiency by shutting off the engine when braking to a stop. While intended to restart upon releasing the brake, my 2025 models have reported issues with failing to restart or stalling.

The idle stop feature sometimes fails to reengage / restart the engine. One time, the van failed to restart and the vehicle completely locked up while I was in an exit ramp to the freeway. I had to turn the van off and turn it back on to get it to shift into drive and go. Similar events have happened a number of times, since the summer of 2025. We have taken it to the dealer twice now, and have been told to "monitor" it. We found the NHTSA report #EA25004 and believe this is the issue we are experiencing. Occasionally, the idle stop will restart, but it's a very violent restart (car sputters and chokes in restart, sounds like it might stall). The car will make a warning light flash and give an error message, but it always clears too quickly to read it.

Since purchasing this vehicle brand new off the truck, we have had it back at the dealership multiple times ,we've taken it for the plug in console not working for firesticks, a sensor not working on the passenger side door and claiming it to be open, the sliding door not working correctly, the doors locking and refusing to unlock, battery draining, ac not working, stalling, dying at lights, slamming on its own brakes with nothing around, transmission acting weird, it putting itself in to sport mode, transmission sticking, doors not unlocking or not locking, sensors going off, random errors on dash, screens not working, Car play not working, suspension popping, steering being wiggly and loose, brakes squeeling. Idle Stop Failure. This has occurred many times. Presents itself as: Failure to restart upon releasing the brake. Rough restart. Sometimes have to completely turn off car and restart.

My Odyssey has a no-restart issue related to Auto Idle Stop. Engineer did not restart at red light and I had to push the button twice. We were caught in traffic and was not safe.

When the Auto Idle Stop is engaged, I have now had 3 instances of the engine completely stalling when at a stop. Not only has the engine stalled, but I have difficulty getting the engine to restart. It has been very scary, as it has left me disabled at busy intersections while I struggle to get my van to start so I can move and pray nobody hits me while I sit there. I've even had to open the driver's door to get the van to restart. We've made a habit of manually turning the auto idle stop feature off every time we drive it. This problem has not occurred when the feature is turned off. The first incident of this was several months ago, and I already took it to my local dealer but they couldn't replicate the issue and did nothing about it.

Idle stop engine turned engine off at a stop light. When the foot was removed from the brake pedal the engine struggled to start up. It took several attempts to get the engine to start up. This has occurred before and the dealer replaced the battery. However, it is now happening again. There were no warnings .

Stopped at red light. Auto start/stop engaged. Light turned green let off of brake and pressed gas. Engine did not start. Couple seconds later engine started.

When the vehicle is stopped, and the auto-shut off engages, the vehicle will turn off, and the vehicle has to be restarted. Quite dangerous when in traffic and the vehicle is dead due to the auto-shut off not starting again. The fix is believed to be an updated starter engine computer and starter motor.

The vehicle intermittently fails to restart after the auto start/stop stopped the engine. This happened several times when stopped at a traffic signal, nearly causing an accident when cars behind expected to move after the traffic signal turned green. There were no warnings or indications prior to the failure to start. Multiple attempts to restart the vehicle failed until at least a minute or so had elapsed. The vehicle has also intermittently failed to start after being parked for a few minutes after being driven for 20 minutes or so. The starter has generally sounded weak when starting, and when it fails to start it sounds like the engine tries to start turning for a fraction of a second before it stops trying to crank the engine. With vehicle auto start/stop feature enabled, vehicle just shuts off when attempting to start back up after shutting off at a stop light. It has happened multiple times and recently it even happened with the auto start/stop feature turned off. Took it to the dealership and they tested everything to include the battery and they weren’t able to duplicate it. A review of forums showed other people with the same issue and it is pointing to a faulty starter, but no recall has been issued yet.

The Idle Stop feature failed to restart the engine when I released the brake after having stopped at a traffic light. Eventually restarted after more than a minute of manually pressing the ignition button.

Auto start/stop functionality has resulted in vehicle stalling mid traffic as vehicle does not start and shutdowns. This has occurred in multiple occasions and most recently almost caused an accident with my family. We sent to dealer who checked battery and stated to issues. There were no warnings and dealer was unable to reproduce as they didn’t drive the vehicle. I have concerns with this new vehicle after finding other reports of this issue.

My car has been dying when I stop at stoplights. We took it into the dealership and they said the battery was sending error messages. So we replaced the battery. It is doing it again. Honda Odyssey EX-L sport 2025 has been facing the issue of idle stop not working causing engine to stall, engine failing to restart, shutting off completely during mid traffic especially during adaptive cruise control operation. This is causing an unsafe driving situation. While this issue was reported to Scott Clark Honda multiple times and they have claimed to fix this issue in Aug 2025, the issue continues to exist and root cause hasn't been fixed. This seems to be related towards the on-going investigation by NHTSA. Please help to resolve at the earliest since no further support is being received from Honda.

Since July 4, 2025, this can has intermittently shut off and stalled on me, my wife and my family and has refused to start. It has now been back to the service department of Trust Honda of Palmdale 4 different times for the same problem and the battery has been replaced on this van back in July. Most recently, it stalled just two days ago in rush hour morning traffic on the 405 Freeway going South in the San Fernando Valley. The display on the dash read “dead battery “. When I stop, they start stop, turns the engine off, but when I release the brake, the engine struggles to turn over and sometimes doesn’t and I have to put it in park to restart it. I have taken it to the dealership already once, but they said they weren’t able to reproduce it. I will be taking it back to the dealer to try again.

Two concerning and dangerous malfunctions are occurring. 1.)When car is stopped at a light for more than 45 seconds the car engine shuts off, when I press on the gas the dashboard lights up and displays a battery light and advises me to restart the car. The car struggles to turn over. 2.) The car struggles to start on initial start as well. The dealership replaced the battery and it continues to happen, they advised me to disengage idol stop every time I start my vehicle to save the starter and prevent the car from stalling. This is obviously a problem with the Honda idol start that needs to be addressed. There are multiple threads in online forums about this issue with Honda.

Three times now since buying my van about 6 months ago brand new, I come to a stop light, the engine turns off, but then it won't come back on when the light turns green. I have had to put my hazards on while I frantically push the start button multiple times. Eventually it will start up but takes 1-2 minutes. I brought it into the dealer the first time and they blamed it on a weak battery. After it happened 2 more times, they are replacing the starter but I'm afraid that's not going to fix it. While I wait, i just have to turn off the idle start/stop button every time I start my van.

A message of a systems failure was displayed, and an image of a pedal and the Push to Start button were displayed. The contact was able to manually restart the vehicle immediately. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring and had worsened. The contact stated that the vehicle could only be manually restarted after 10 minutes, nearly causing a crash. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.

The idle engine feature is defective. Often, when stopped and the engine goes idle, it will not restart when the driver releases the brake. The van stalls, and the driver is forced to move the vehicle into park and start the engine again. This is dangerous and stressful because the driver behind you expects you to go, especially when the light turns green, but you are stalled, potentially leading to rear-end accidents.

Brand new vehicle and system shuts down a few times when in idle mode..(stoplight, stop sign) then I need to restart the car again.

At a stop, the fuel save system shut the car off. When you take your foot off the brake the van fails to restart. If you try to restart using the push button the car will still not start because the transmission is still in drive. Then it takes awhile to get the transmission into park/neutral and then the van will start. The problem is intermittent 3 times in the last 2 months. No accidents just blocking traffic. My wife doesn't like that.

I think there is a problem with the Auto Idle Stop system that has resulted in the starter needing to be replaced. But, the dealership says nothing is wrong. The Auto Idle Stop malfunction lights up when I let off the brake. I have gotten in the habit of turning off the AIS every time I started the car. However, it still is hesitating to start, which leads me to believe the AIS has killed the starter.

Van completely shut down while in an intersection and the battery light came on. It was hard to restart. Took it to the dealership and they cannot find the problem.

The auto on/off while idling will randomly fail. The car stalls, all emergency lights turn on and the car won’t start for a few minutes. This has occurred at stop lights and in traffic after coming to a complete stop and the car turns off when idling. The car is only 6 months old. The first occurrence happened at the 3 month mark and has become more persistent. I’ve had my battery checked and that was not an issue.

While driving in a construction zone, the vehicle's lane departure system jerked the wheel and almost made me leave the lane Very dangerous. Same vehicle, the A'C was found not operating and a dealer diagnosis found that the system was overfilled and that an electrical connection was not hooked up from the factory. Same vehicle, body panels are not properly aligned from the sliding door to the passenger side door, gap is almost 1/2 inch.
